In Gambia, the non-metallic mineral sector is currently transitioning from basic raw material exportation to the utilization of processed additives. The high humidity and saline coastal air of the region create a significant demand for corrosion-resistant materials, where mica powder serves as a critical filler in protective coatings and paints.
Currently, the local manufacturing capacity for refined minerals is limited, leading to a heavy reliance on imported high-purity mica flake. These materials are essential for the emerging electronics assembly and small-scale electrical panel manufacturing within the Banjul industrial zones.
The synergy between traditional construction methods and modern mineralogy is evident in the increasing use of specialized mica for heat-resistant cement and industrial ceramics, helping Gambian enterprises reduce maintenance costs in high-temperature environments.
